Getting a divorce is a huge decision, especially if you have children at home. Many couples start counseling because they don’t want to get a divorce and are looking for solutions to make their marriage better. Besides the fact that divorce is expensive, no child wants their parents to split up. Therefore, it is worth your time and money to invest in good couple’s counseling to see if the problems can improve. Marriage counseling can help you and your partner to reconnect again and learn to understand each other’s perspectives.

One of the biggest issues I see in marriages with children is that the husband and wife stop going out and having fun together. Their focus tends to be on the kids and careers. Having fun together is a very important aspect of enjoying a relationship and often one of the reasons you fell in love in the first place.

Another major issue that contributes to deterioration of marriages is that couples greatly reduce or stop having sex regularly. Your sex life is very important to the health of a marriage and allows both people to feel close to each other.

The third biggest issues I see is that couple’s have dysfunctional communication styles. They are not able to truly see each other’s perspectives and as a result stop communicating effectively as they are afraid it will lead to fights. Although many issues can be worked through , there are several that are deal breakers for most people. The three things that can almost always guarantee a marriage end in divorce are: chronic infidelity, abuse (either emotional or physical) and any type of addiction ( unless your partner seeks treatment).

In conclusion, many marital issues can be improved upon with good marriage counseling.
